Rural Coalition Art Action

Greetings!
It was so great to lead a creative Action last week at the Rural Coalition’s Winter Forum.

At the forum we had over 20 hands on participants and over 50 supporters offering ideas to create 2 awesome banners for the sponsoring organizations.

When we engage in creative action POSSIBILITIES ABOUND!

2013 is the year! 

It’s time for us to “Ante Up” our Creative Wads, Our Green, Our Creative Coinage.

So pull out that wad, that dime, your opulent imagination, your wealth of ideas and visual resources.

2013 is the year. Let’s work together for our Land, People, Justice and Hope!

UPPER MARLBORO, MD – The Prince George’s County Board of Education has announced new dates for the Superintendent Search Process Community Forums. Previously scheduled forums were canceled due to Hurricane Sandy. The community forums are designed to give the public an opportunity to share their input on what qualities, strengths and professional skills they would like to see in the next Superintendent of Schools.

The forums are scheduled as follows:

While taking a walk in one of my favorite neighborhood spots Cheltenham Wetlands Park in Upper Marlboro, MD. I was shocked to see that so many of the trees had been munched by the local beaver. And was amused when I saw this beaver carcass! The circle of life!

Goodnow Garden Totem Project

This is an awesome project! I was invited to a 6 day residency by Amy Macht (The Macht Foundation) and Gloria Jenkins from the Goodnow Community Center in Baltimore. I have worked with them before to create Good Character Banners, Ancestor Masks and even a fiberglass Baltimore Crab sculpture with the young people who come to them for after school activities.

When I arrived at the center for a planning meeting, I saw the new community garden that they had created last Summer. I immediately envisioned the totems in my mind's eye! I was told that their neighborhood has new residents who are refugees from Bhuton and the Congo. The fact is that they had requested the opportunity to grow food on some unused land at the center. Out of this sprung a Community Garden.

Six workshops later, our participants had reviewed totem history in the Americas as well as abroad to inspire them. The created shapes and sketches for each piece on the poles. They then painted their shapes which were assembled onto the poles to bring the energy of growth, partnership and sustainability to their own garden.
